I don’t know about you, but one of the biggest causes of stress in the evenings for me is the question “what’s for dinner?” Ok, that question and the “witching hour” in which both boys are very fussy for unknown reasons…but back to the dinner question. I have finally taken baby steps to start meal planning and those small steps have already started making my life infinitely easier (a post on that later), but even if you aren’t ready to devote the time to meal planning, one thing that helps me is to keep my kitchen stocked.
You know your family’s preferences. You know the meals they enjoy regularly. If you are a spaghetti-loving family, keep spaghetti, sauce, and cheese on hand. If your family prefers alfredo (is there a pasta theme here?), keep cream, fettuccini, and shrimp or chicken available.
Whether you’ve had time to plan or prepare ahead, having the ingredients on hand to make a few dishes will save you those last minute trips to the grocery store and may also help prevent you from ordering delivery. Stock your freezer – buy chicken in bulk and freeze the pieces individually. Buy bags of frozen shrimp. Buy multiple types of pasta. Just keep a variety (though perhaps a limited variety of perishables-no one likes it when food goes bad) on hand and you will be able to throw something together at night.
What are some of your family’s favorite meals? Do you keep the ingredients for those meals on hand?
