With September just around the corner, parents are turning their thoughts to “back to school,” but what does that mean when your children are too young to be considered school-aged? It is never too early to start focusing on your child’s learning, even when he or she is still a toddler, but what does that look like for a toddler?
For us, we will be focusing on the basics for #babyD this fall. We will continue to encourage him with his counting. He’s strong 1 to 10, but we need to keep practicing 10+. We will also teach him 11 through 20 in Spanish (he has 1 to 10 down, thanks to his wonderful daycare teachers). We will strengthen his skills when it comes to recognizing colors (he struggles the most with yellow, and his current favorite color is green). We will also start helping him learn his letters.
We will have regular art time for the boys (this mama needs to make or invest in washable paints), and I am picking up several posters to help them start recognizing the letters and numbers that they can recite.
Songs are a great tool to encourage learning. Singing the ABC’s is an easy way to help your toddlers learn what the letters are called, even if they don’t yet recognize them in written form.
It is vitally important to not put too much pressure on your children (or yourself!) in their young years, but failing to use these early opportunities to make learning easy (and fun!) will make it more difficult for children as they grow.
