How to Make a Felt Board

This project is one of the most FUN I’ve done.

It’s simple, easy to make, and really fun to create shapes, story boards and characters, you know your kids will love!

I did this in an afternoon, and am so glad I did, because my 2 girls are having a ball with it! This has kept them entertained for hours. I just left it in their room and they keep revisiting it over and over.

Here, I will show you step-by-step how I did it.

Step 1:

Find a board. It can be wood, or a strong cardboard. Think about the size you want the felt board to be. I chose long and narrow, so that my 2 girls could play side-by-side if they wished, or play vertically on their own.

Step 2:

Cut a piece of felt sized a little bit larger than the board, so that you can fold it over to be stapled. I double-layered the felt.

Step 3:

Staple the fabric down with a staple gun, pulling it gently, so that it is firm and flat. If using cardboard, glue it down on the front and back side.

You could stop here, skip step 4, and move onto creating the shapes, to save time. I added a back, which I will summarize here in step 4.

Step 4:

Add the reverse-side piece of felt. To hide some of the staples, I stapled one end of fabric down, then folded it back over. I then stapled the other end down, and folded back up again to create a pocket.

I made the pocket for the storage of the characters. However, it is not necessary. You could put the characters in a separate draw-string bag, or just leave them on the felt board.

I put a few staples down the side to hold everything in place.

Step 5:

This is the fun part! Cut out people, houses, castles, animals, barns, trains, cars, the sun and stars; whatever your child would LOVE!

You can copy what I did here or make up your own. Keep the shapes simple, and not too fiddly. Make lots of them, and in replicate, in case some get lost.

It’s time to play!

It honestly works! My daughter actually said “WOW!” when she saw it, then sat there content to play on her own for ages, before I had them both play together.

They then continued to play well with it side by side. Hooray!! This is especially great, as it is winter right now, and indoor life is becoming a bore. Something new was greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading! I hope you have as much fun as I did with it.
